Wood wall unit with two compartments.

The First Nations peoples were not familiar with the use of salt to preserve foods. Instead, they relied on drying and smoking. The French, who used salt as a seasoning and preservative, found Aboriginal dishes too bland. Pepper and, to a lesser degree, clove, cinnamon and nutmeg were used to flavour French specialities. The lower compartment of this wall unit may have been used as a salt box.
